Allieviating PMS, Female Cycle Issues and Fighting PCOS with Ketogenic Lifestyle

There are lots of stories of women reversing their PMS, Menopause and PCOS symptoms and even getting pregnant after changing their lifestyle and going keto. It can sometimes sound unbelievable that changing how you eat can change your female cycle and fertility.

What is PCOS?  It’s a reproductive disorder that affects about 10-15% of all women.

The symptoms are upsetting: infrequent or absent menstrual periods, infertility, weight gain, acne, facial hair growth such as mustaches and sideburns, sometimes even losing scalp hair. Blood tests almost always show insulin resistance and higher male hormones (testosterone). Often the ovaries are found on ultrasound to be dotted with cysts.

Women with PMS and other hormone imbalances including PCOS are typically treated with a cocktail of drugs such as birth control pills, the diabetes prescription Metformin used to lower blood sugar, (because you are insulin resistant) and medications for mood swings you experience such depression and anxiety. Then, if they want to get pregnant, fertility drugs are usually given to try to stimulate ovulation. At least 50% of the time the fertility drugs do not work and other techniques, such as in vitro fertilization are tried which is frustrating and costly.

Eating a low carbohydrate, high fat, moderate protein lifestyle can lower insulin and reverse insulin resistance in women and women with menstrual cycle issues, cysts, hormone imbalances including endometriosis and PCOS, and will helping to balance your hormones. This will then enables ovulation and a normal menstrual cycle, while reducing or eliminating other symptoms.

Please keep in mind I am not a physician, but I personally did have endometrial cancer stage 4 and had severe PMS from age 12 to 34, PCOS, infertility issues and had to have a total hysterectomy at age 34 when we were still trying to have another child. I went through mood swings, doctors  always said “oh you are just depressed or angry because you can’t have another baby, here’s a prescription”. I wasn’t sleeping, “oh here’s a prescription for that”.       I hated taking prescription medication to function daily. I studied to become a Certified Nutrition and Wellness Consultant and I also spent a 4 day long weekend with Suzanne Somers at the America Academy of Aging (A4M) in Orlando along with 4000 other doctors to learn integrative health. I strongly encourage you to speak to a health professional about addressing your thyroid and bio-identical therapy which I have used successfully for almost 20 years with great success for elimination of many symptoms after going through surgical menopause and with high fat, low carbohydrate, moderate protein protein, I have my life back.

Women also do not know how to relax and get unplugged from devices because cell phones, tablets, TV are all attached to us and we just don’t stop thinking.  Try to make it a new habit to shut off tablets, phones, at about 7:00-7:30 pm and just relax and have quality time, walk the beach, take yoga or pilates, and just breathe.  Take a hot bath in Epsom salt and rest. Your body will be adapting to a new lifestyle and it has been in the old stressed out over-worked one for awhile so let’s take this journey hormonal balance and overall wellness together one step at a time.  I have been there and I will be here for you.

You have been yo-you dieting or been fed wrong information and trying every diet out there and it has only caused your metabolism to slow down. You were told to eat 3 meals and 2 snacks a day to keep metabolism moving or you totally don’t eat then binge eat at night mindlessly.
You even incorporated exercising daily for hours trying to make the scale budge, but your metabolic rate slowed down despite the exercise.
This is why the theory “Eat less, exercise more does not work long term” but resting metabolic rate will go up while you exercise. You just won’t be able to keep it up. You will create a “failure” attitude and that something is wrong with you and you just cannot figure out the problem.
What happens every time you eat, insulin goes up and sends messages to your brain and body to store fat. Carbohydrates turn to Glycogen in liver and then the liver stores the fat. — fats, proteins and carbohydrates — is broken down during digestion into proteins, micronutrients and glucose. The body uses the proteins and nutrients in cellular metabolism, immune function, and cell replacement. The body uses glucose as its basic fuel, which is carried by the bloodstream to individual cells.

Have you heard the term “Insulin Resistance” I did not until my research and several books took me there and that was the key to fit the lock to open the next door to my new happy fulfulling lifestyle.
I had interrupted sleep throughout the night, waking up dragging my feet, napping daily by 2pm to 3pm with severe mental fatigue, weight gain all over even though I was at gym daily at 7 am doing aerobics with weights. I thought I knew how to eat right since I have been a Certified Nutrition Consultant for 12 years and helped so many people but I was stuck at least for a little while. I blamed hormones.

Insulin is a hormone too. Over 80 million Americans suffer from insulin resistance, and it appears to be a disregarded topic by medical professionals. It’s actually pre-diabetic. A prescription drug one of the most highly prescribed one is often given when this can totally be reversed with proper nutrition. Women who are insulin resistant are at a higher risk of obesity, diabetes, high blood pressure, heart disease, high cholesterol, breast cancer and poly-cystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS) and infertility. It has also been implicated in Alzheimer’s disease in men and women.

Well personally my body was stuck, resisting any method I tried to released the stored insulin in my cells.
When we eat, the food is stored as fat.
However when we do not eat: Such as FASTING: Your body is now forced to burn the existing sugar (glycogen) that’s trapped in your cells to be released. In case you are wondering, you will not be burning muscle that is a myth which I will blog about in great detail.
Fasting insulin levels fall..energy comes from stored fat and sugar in your body.

However, you must flip the switch from sugar and carbohydrate burning to Fat Burning mode and you will do this without any medication or supplement!

This is the hardest but yet the best step you can do when you learn how to flip the switch and keep the switch on fat burning!

You will be taught how to get into fat burning mode safely with food for at least 2 weeks, then we incorporate Intermittent fasting. Intermittent Fasting is something I practice daily. Personally, I eat lunch and dinner in a 6 hour or 8 hour window and do not eat the rest of the time. I have been in ketosis (fat burning mode) through this entire time because of the proper food choices.

Fasting is also like a Detox for your organs. It removes all the stored glycogen to get to that stubborn layer of fat surrounding your organs, liver, gallbladder and kidneys especially.

You will not be in starvation, your body is using your own stored fat. This also increases your oxygen and your energy will be soaring, nor-epinephrine increases and your resting energy expenditure goes up burning more energy if you should fast through Day 4…but we won’t scare you with that now..Many athletes use this approach to reach Autophagy which will be described in another post. Actors like Hugh Jackman aka Wolverine use this method to get into his great physique to play his role as this raises your Human Growth Hormone naturally without one needle.
